该电影改编自佐藤泰志小说，讲述主人公工藤和雄为了治愈心病，和妻子一起回到故乡函馆，无法工作的工藤在接受心理治疗的同时，每天都在函馆街头漫步，遇到了不少年轻人后逐渐发生变化的故事。

故事讲述生活在印度的一个英国家族剧团。他们在城镇和乡村间巡回演出莎士比亚的戏剧。透过他们的旅程，观众可看见印度的面貌在不断变化，旧事物被新事物所取代，印度王公变成了酒店老板，体育运动变得比文化活动更重要，传统剧院被宝莱坞电影所取代。影片改编自Geoffrey Kendal和他女儿Felicity Kendal的游记。
